Well Servicing
Maintenance procedures performed on an oil or gas well after the well has been completed and production from the reservoir has begun. Well service activities are generally conducted to maintain or enhance the well productivity, although some slickline and coiled tubing applications are performed to assess or monitor the performance of the well or reservoir.
Workover
The process of performing major maintenance or remedial treatments on an oil or gas well. In many cases, workover implies the removal and replacement of the production tubing string after the well has been killed and a workover rig has been placed on location.
Plug & Abandon
Preparation of a well to be closed permanently, usually after either logs determine there is insufficient hydrocarbon potential to complete the well, or after production operations have drained the reservoir. Different regulatory bodies have their own requirements for plugging operations. Most require that cement plugs be placed and tested across any open hydrocarbon-bearing formations, across all casing shoes, across freshwater aquifers, and perhaps several other areas near the surface, including the top 20 to 50 ft [6 to 15 m] of the wellbore.
